KENNER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COURT

A court dedicated to educate and protect, the Domestic Violence Court was instituted in April 2005. These cases were previously handled in the regular court. This Court handles all domestic violence issues, including parental neglect cases.

The Clerk of Court/Mayor's Court believes dedicating part of the court system to Domestic Violence issues sends a message to the community that domestic violence will not be tolerated.

ALL APPEARANCES IN COURT

Every appearance of a Kenner criminal domestic abuse case is held in Domestic Violence Court from the arraignment to trial. This type of court promotes consistency of case disposition and expertise in domestic abuse on the part of the Magistrate. It is important to understand that this Domestic Violence Court is modeled after the Duluth Model.

DULUTH MODEL

The Duluth Model was designed in 1981 as a coordinated community response of law enforcement, the criminal and civil courts, and human service providers working together to make communities safer for victims and hold offenders accountable for their behavior. The Duluth curriculum is the most widely used program in the country and around the world. It has also been adapted for use in with different cultures. The Duluth curriculum is a cognitive behavioral program that focuses less on assessment, and more on how power relationships and entitlement are reflected in individuals, families, communities, and different cultures.

MEASUREMENT OF OUTCOME

This Domestic Violence Court is not limited to certain dispositions on the outcome of domestic violence cases. Jail time, unsupervised probation, and 26 classes are some of the dispositions of this court. This list is inclusive not exclusive.
