The City of Kenner proudly announced the Grand Opening of the city's Hispanic Resource Center on June 26th, 2003. Kenner is the first community in the state of Louisiana to create a resource center for its rapidly growing Hispanic population. The center is located at 4312 Florida Avenue and will offer various programs as well as access to information and referrals for all sorts of issues.
Some of the features that are already offered to Spanish speaking residents include: interpretation services for court hearings, negotiation assistance in obtaining permits, paying fines, getting marriage licenses, or assistance in understanding policies and procedures through the City's Spanish-speaking liaison. City employees and residents have access to these services. In addition, the Resource Center will offer referrals for medical assistance, legal advice, and counseling services.
The Resource Center will offer after-school homework and computer tutorials. It will have ESL classes for Spanish-speaking immigrants and, in time, will offer Spanish classes for English-speaking residents who want to improve their communication with Spanish-speaking employees or co-workers.
The Resource Center will also become home to Louisiana's first certified, Hispanic Homebuyers' training program, which was established under Mayor Congemi's leadership with assistance from Conchita Sulli. Upon completion, the program offers qualifying graduates up to $2500 toward the down payment on a home. Since its October 2001 inception, the program has allowed 20 families to realize the American dream of home ownership in Kenner. Five other families are currently in the process of becoming homeowners this year.
The Center will also offer citizenship training for those who wish to become American citizens. As the needs of our Hispanic community evolve, the Resource Center will evolve to meet them.
