Fire Safety & Community Programs
The Kenner Fire Department is deeply committed to the safety and well-being of our community. We believe that the best emergency is the one that never happens, which is why we work year-round to educate, engage, and empower residents to prevent fire and life safety risks before they occur. Through our Fire Prevention Bureau, we offer a variety of free programs and services designed to protect families, educate children, and support the most vulnerable members of our city.
Free Smoke Alarms Installation
A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between life and death. These small devices provide early warning in the event of a fire, giving you and your family precious time to escape.
Safety Tips:
- Install smoke alarms outside every bedroom and on each level of your home.
- Place an alarm near the kitchen and garage entryway as added precautions.
- Change your batteries every six months; many people do this when clocks change in spring and fall.
Need a smoke alarm?
We offer free smoke alarm installation to Kenner residents. Call (504) 468-4000 to schedule yours today.
Safety House Demonstrations
Every child participates in fire drills at school, but we go beyond that. Our Safety House Program brings hands-on fire safety education directly to schools, daycare centers, and community events. The smoke house is brought to the community by certified fire educators, and children learn vital techniques like “Look. Listen. Feel.” and practice how to safely evacuate a smoke-filled environment in a controlled, educational setting.

Fire Extinguisher Safety: Know the P.A.S.S. Method
Being prepared means knowing how and when to act. If a fire occurs, you can practice this with your family so that children or members of the family who do not move quickly will know the fastest way to evacuate.
Here are tips on what to do if you see a fire in your home or workplace:
- Sound the alarm. At home, yell to alert your family. At work, pull the nearest fire alarm.
- Use a fire extinguisher only if it’s safe to do so. Remember the P.A.S.S. technique:
- P – Pull the pin to break the tamper seal.
- A – Aim low, pointing the nozzle at the base of the fire.
- S – Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
- S – Sweep from side to side until the fire is out.
- If the extinguisher empties and the fire remains, evacuate immediately and call 911. And always remember: if you smell smoke, gas, or suspect danger, don’t hesitate to call 911 and have our Kenner firefighters provide assistance.
Safe Haven Program
The Kenner Fire Department is a designated Safe Haven under Louisiana state law. If a parent feels unable to care for a newborn, they can safely and confidentially leave the baby, no questions asked, at any Kenner fire station or designated Safe Haven site.
Babies 30 days old or younger can be surrendered without fear of prosecution.
Our firefighters will provide immediate care and ensure the child’s safety.
This compassionate program is designed to protect infants and give families in crisis a safe alternative.

Empowering Kenner Residents to Prevent Emergencies Before They Happen
The Kenner Fire Department (KFD) launched its Safety Training Program on October 30, 2018, following a devastating structure fire that left a local family homeless. This program was created with one mission in mind: to prevent emergencies before they happen by educating our community about everyday risks and how to avoid them. Through real-life experience on calls across Kenner from medical emergencies and water rescues to backyard incidents involving grills and pools, our firefighters have identified many preventable hazards. The Safety Training Program brings these lessons directly to you through educational videos, demonstrations, and hands-on learning.
