Auto Sales New / Used
The City of Kenner has regulations regarding auto sales, service and repair businesses pursuant to Code of Ordinances Appendix A Section 20.04(j).
A retail auto sales business includes but is not limited to the following:
- New Vehicles Sales
- Used Vehicles Sales
- Motorcycle Sales or
- Recreational Vehicles Sales
Auto Sales Business Standards
All automobile, motorcycle, boat and trailer sales, new and used, and automotive service and repair operations, must adhere to the following:
- Automobile, motorcycle, boat and trailer sales, new and used, sales area need not be enclosed
- Service and repair facilities that correspond to automobile, motorcycle, boat and trailer sales, new and used, must be enclosed and if the facility is located within 100 feet of a residential district, it must have no other opening other than fixed windows.
- All vehicles on a used car lot must be in operating condition at all times.
- No parts or waste material shall be stored outside the building.
- Damaged automobiles and/or other vehicles awaiting repair, must be stored in an area enclosed with a solid wood or masonry fence, minimum six feet high, to adequately screen the area from public view.
- All repair operations, including mechanical and body operations, must be conducted in a building.
- All vehicles located on the premises must be parked on an impervious hard surfaced area.
- All vehicles on the premises must be stored inside a building or in an area enclosed with a solid wood or masonry fence, minimum six feet high after business hours.
- To open an Auto Sales Service or Repair business in the City of Kenner, the following are required for submittal:
- A completed Occupational License Application (PDF). Any questions regarding the application can be answered by contacting the Occupational License office of the Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement at 504-468-4064. Once the application is received in our office, it will be forwarded to the following in house agencies for approval:
- Verification from the Planning Department for the City of Kenner that the business is properly zoned. The Planning Department may be reached at 504-468-7280 for questions relating to zoning.
- Verification from the Wastewater Department or city contractor that the business does not need approval or that the business is permitted in accordance with all applicable codes. The city contractor may be reached at 504-468-7515 regarding any wastewater discharge, grease traps, or sewerage questions.
- Verification from the Permit Office for Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement that the business has been inspected and is permitted in accordance with all applicable codes. - A completed Occupational License Application (PDF). - A completed Auto Sales Service and Repair Requirements sheet regarding regulations for auto sales, service and repair must be signed and submitted with application. Download requirements sheet. Business Permit Information
- The applicant must submit a complete package (application and approvals from all applicable departments and agencies) for processing. Failure to submit a completed packet can result in longer processing times and delay of the opening of the business.
- In the event the applicant fails to provide the information, forms, and documents required by the City in connection with this application within 60 days of the date this application is received by the City, the application shall, without further notice, be deemed to have been voluntarily withdrawn as of that date and no further action will be taken in connection with the application.
- The prospective business owner should also consult with the Louisiana Department of Revenue, the Jefferson Parish Bureau of Revenue and Taxation and all other agencies tasked with the regulation and collection of sales tax associated with the business.
